Great way to spend time with loved ones (which is healthy itself) is to walk with them. (Holding hands is optional.)

What Mr. Durant is trying to say is, your body is made to move while upright on your two feet.

Or simply, you are made to move often and a lot.

Humans are not made to sit. In fact, the majority of our ancestors’ lives were spent sleeping or moving.

Sure, there were times when we’d lounge around or sit by the fire, but these instances were a small percent of the total time humans spent their lives.

What does this mean for you? It means a few things. Let’s see…

First, it means that you need to get upright and move MORE than you are now. Our ancestors averaged about 13 miles a day of walking. The average person is at about 3 miles a day, and for some of you, it’s much less than that.

Second, it means sitting is killing you. Try a standing desk or even laying in bed while working.

Lastly, it means that you are not only missing out on a valuable form of exercise, but you are also missing out on the all the beneficial hormones that moving produces. You are literally a less-functioning human being.

  • Start taking walks.
  • Walk after meals.
  • Take the stairs.
  • Park at the END of the parking lot instead of driving around looking for a close spot just to save a few steps.

The more you move, the healthier you are. You will be happier (thank the hormones). You will burn more calories. You will live longer. You will be a better functioning human being in all ways. Not bad.
